Mixed-use Housing in Santiago.

Nowadays we are facing the need for housing projects that go outside of domestic specificity. The way in which the economy—both in our country and the rest of the world—has behaved in the last decade, has produced a restlessness and searching for new forms of sustenance for the individual, who has ultimately been able to make ends meet by clinging to what little they have. In many cases this is done by the commercial exploitation of their properties, thus mixing work and housing. The question raised by this is when the house yields to accommodate productivity.

The study of a case located in a residential-commercial sector, where the same inhabitants have managed to understand its needs; the demand for urban equipment due to poor neighborhood planning; and the offer of services provided for the neighbors themselves to supply the lack of formal employment, all this materializes within the housing property, modifying it to establish the "warehouse".

This project aims to formalize this reality by integrating both programs –housing and small business, leaving aside the generic condition of the traditional housing system in Chile. The building is a ring that encloses a big collective patio, with a first level of commercial stores that feeds on the surroundings. On top of it, the vertical housing adheres to it as a parasite that connects directly to the park, which contains the ring’s domestic life.

Through these operations the project turns into a productive node located in a mostly residential area on Avenida Gabriela, in Puente Alto district; thus, proposing a major change to the unfortunate urbanization of the existing neighborhoods, providing services, shops, and crafts that add new value to them. A complementary commercial system that is strengthened through the community, an organization "that manifests itself as an enormous energy of social interaction, despite the visual and functional disorder (…)” (Jáuregui, 2008).
