Architecture and religious memory
The symbolism and religion have been linked directly to the questions of human beings in relation to their existence and death, where the architecture has a major role in the interpretation and manifestation of memory facing this definitive fact.

The funeral building must reflect the cultural beliefs of the human being where death is the transcendental element of its existence. Its architecture is the result of the desire to realize a physical place for the memory of life, summarizing the most relevant aspects of each culture, their beliefs.

Currently the situation of the General Cemetery of Antofagasta presents a collapse, as its spatial growth has not been similar to urban and demographic growth of the city. Therefore, it is necessary to improve, densify and link the present cemetery with the urban environment, establishing a memorial park to promote dialogue between the city and the meditation space. In that way, intervention and project design within the Cementerio General retains the role of link needed to establish the perception of transfer between life and death, along with the relationship of the mourner with the human being who is no longer present .

In synthesis, the design is based on factors that give the symbolic funeral to work: memory, ritual and place; as well as the meaning and significance that society has granted death through architecture, within the framework of the Catholic religion.
