LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Development in its topographical , ecological and social condition.
The geographical and urban composition of Valparaíso is one of its most relevant conditions, giving to the city a particular identity within de national and international framework. This harbor-city shows a variety of scenarios, including ecological landscapes as their iconic hills and creeks and a urban setting constantly changing, together with the appropriation of the landscape of Valparaíso as a place of possible -but highly-risk- habitability.

Currently, Valparaíso’s creeks are part of the natural boundaries of the city, being these areas excluded from the urban planning; however, they are structural elements of the urban network. The working hypothesis considers planning the creeks in a method by which is possible to recover and restore their ecological value, through their integration to the inevitable process of urban growth.

The main strategy consists on working with the creeks in two ways: Macro scale: by creating a biological corridor – public park, through the reforestation with the native vegetation, and restoring the value of the natural watercourse; and Micro Scale: by the disposition of a serial of architectonic artefacts designed for community and neighborhood activities (flea markets, child playgrounds, neighbor centers). As an acupuncture intervention, this architectonic system is installed on the bottom on the creek, in direct relation with the watercourse, in such a way to generate an appropriation of the landscape by the people who lives close to the creek.

The biological corridor and the variety of architectonical operations related to collective and community activities enhance the value of the creek, taking advantage of the natural condition of them, as an exceptional green an ecological space inside the city.
