Spaces for production and innovation of wicker in Chimbarongo
The impact of globalization on contemporary society and its relation to local traditions and productive work currently represent a both threat and an opportunity in terms of their disappearance or conservation.
1. The possible extinction of wicker in Chimbarongo In Chile depends on various production factors. Wicker-related activities are affected at all levels, from the cultivation of the fibre, to the manufacture and corresponding services. A complex scenario is currently unfolding, while we remain rooted in a tradition that is part of the location. However, a number of opportunities that can begin to reverse the current situation have been presented in recent years. An appreciation of natural products, combined with local territorial factors in Chimbarongo, offers new hope.
2. This project promotes a Wicker Factory that aims to be a source of raw materials and a distribution platform for the origins and properties of wicker that are largely unknown. The proposal aims to accommodate the relaunching of productive activity, where wicker meets the different actors involved in this activity, in order to generate an exchange of knowledge that would entail some kind of innovation.
3. Project strategies
Territory
• Regional Scale. The proposed project lies within a thematic tourism circuit related to production.
• Local Scale. The line functions as a shorter geometric operation for joining two points (the city / reservoir).
Wicker Plantation as Temporal limit
• The plantation as a woven wicker construction capable of creating temporary spaces such as streets, wicker outlets, viewpoints, etc.
• The cultivation of wicker as a formal order.
The Factory
• The building revives wicker temporal processes and the dynamics of water.
• The disappearance / appearance of the building is evident, depending on the annual cycle of wicker production.
