Death ? Talking about death in Chile and most religions around the world, is talking about a rupture, not only of life, also of interpersonal ties forged over existence. The human being is inherently lethal, so that each person differs submit to a type of ritual in the burial of the deceased.
Lota ? A city that lives the memory of his ancestors, the mining history, emotional attachment to their roots and the sea.
Lota Cemetery ? Memory, sacred place and a very strong relationship with the past.
Problem ? Lota Cemetery is in a state of very advanced deterioration, without the basic services required and adding that the land currently used for burials is in a state of collapse, creating the need for an urgent expansion to solve this problem.
The community of Lota admires and recognizes the importance of the cemetery to the memory of their city, and the expansion project does not seek to reconstruct the present cemetery, do not intervene structure and image, seeks to preserve the existing, and adding a place to strengthen the most powerful features of the present cemetery and the environment. These characteristics created the basic lines for the design:
1. Recognition / Current Planning (Method existing burial): Preserve the current cemetery, recognize the structural order that this has, and project it through a series of walls to the place of expansion, creating a relationship with the existing.
2. Sinking walls: No interfere the relationship of the current cemetery with the distant landscape.
3. Space between walls: The program is organized through the space that results in the projection of these walls, incorporating the harsh elements of the extension: Graves, Niches and Mausoleums, leaving at the end of each corridors, viewpoints towards to the distant environment (the sea), just as the current cemetery does.
The extension also incorporates a new program: hall access, basic services, chapel, crematorium and funeral wakes rooms.
