ARTEFACTO DE ACTIVACIÓN EN MEIGGS
Meiggs is a historical commercial district in Santiago (Chile), in which a current expansion is a starting point of the problems that affect the area.
The mixture of cultures, programs and users in one place; the commercial dynamism of the neighbourhood and its character as an anarchic subcenter, combined whit its own environment and regulations, make it an independent entity within Santiago. A city within a city, where there is no written law but a formal understanding of its functionality as an organism.
Meigg’s current situation consist of an urban sprawl of polycentric structure and dynamic borders. The continuous expansion of its surface and limits increases the area of the quarter over time. This growth is strong enough to ignore the regulations and deceive them. In order to obtain the highest profitability and GAIN of sqm, Meiggs’ new buildings have been conceived under a law of the neighbourhood’s constant expansion. I named these buildings commercial mechanisms.
A mechanism is a structure of natural or artificial body, and combination of its constituent parts in order to serve a process.
In the analysis of the Barrio i see the virtuosity of chaos in another of the pieces that call my attention and that I name devices, these devices are mobile food stands or informal sales’ stands, that are currently called to rescue areas of the neighbourhood in degradation with its strategic positioning in search for the flows of potential customers.
Meiggs’ system of devices creates an opportunity to regenerate dead zones in the neighbourhood. The opportunity improves and formalizes the way these mechanisms handle the current requirements of the client and the neighbourhood. In most cases the environment’s decadence and the deceive of regulations, combined with the devices’ potential, make a perfect opportunity to create an activation artefact in Meiggs.
