DEGREE PROJECT, LOS LAGOS REGIONAL ARCHIVE
It is of the utmost interest of the Dirección de Bibliotecas y Museos (DIBAM) to impulse regionalization through subdirection units located in every regional capital city, in order to ensure the safety of local heritage, and strengthen cultural identity. Therefore, a public contest will be carried out in Los Lagos Region, in order to find the most suitable project for the building in which the aforementioned service will be given.
The chosen city is Puerto Montt, capital of Los Lagos Region. This city functions as a tourist, economic, and geographic center, which creates a constant influx of assets regarding the historical and cultural aspects of the city.
The terrain used for this project will be the polygon between Diego Portales Av. and Antonio Varas St., in the corner with San Martin St.. Since this place is accessible, and is near other places of importance, it becomes an easily recognizable landmark, which adjusts to the UNESCO criteria regarding archives and libraries.
The project covers an area of 6000m2, and is divided into full space storage, storage of documents of historical value, studying zones, and finally, extension places.
The general layout is a vault that surrounds a transparent prism which is suspended in the center of the project, and which may be accessed only by DIBAM employees. The surrounding open spaces work as lightwells which illuminate the underground levels and delimit the exterior and interior circulations.
Finally, in each level there is a balcony pointing at different landmarks, such as the city Parade Square, the nearby isles, and Antonio Varas St., a highly transited area. The project in its entirety would have a modeling role in the urban layout of the city, and would consolidate the space around the Parade Square, empowering the civic character of this founding place of Puerto Montt.
